I teach guitar and ukulele in primary schools in the Cambridge area - teaching individuals, small groups and whole classes. I started as a freelance teacher, then joined Cambridgeshire Music in 2000 and was Head of Guitar from 2005 - 2009. In May 2013, as council cuts began to bite, I took the decision to go freelance again.
In recent years I have focussed on working with younger pupils, in particular pioneering the use of ukulele in Key Stage 1 as an access instrument for guitar. This work has led to the publication of two innovative tutor book series: "Rainbow Guitar" and "Rainbow Ukulele" which you can read more about at Ringing Strings Publications.
I also teach mandolin to adults and children. I collaborated with the late Alison Stephens on developing contemporary mandolin repertoire for beginner and intermediate pupils – our book "First Images" (published by Astute Music) appeared in 2008. A book of my intermediate solos called "Signposts” appeared in the same series in 2009 and I have contributed to other Astute books to be published shortly. Several of my pieces are included in the new VCM grade syllabus for mandolin.
In 2002 I founded Moonlight Mandolins, a Histon-based mandolin orchestra which currently boasts around 18 players.
